Viva BrisVegas: The Tasmanian Babes Fiasco

Tassie Babes

While Tassie Babes was my fave show ever, it had a rough start. The first version if the script I wrote was pure rubbish. Later, I kept to just one scene a day and sent it to Natalie Bochenski for a sanity check as the book was her personal favourite. I'd suggested the original storyline to Birmo one telephone call during about '96  when he'd had a leftover Felafel chapter or something. Truth is, I'm shit at storylines but make up for it with character, turn of phrase and a psychotic attention to detail.

I'd seen a version of Tassie Babes that my dear Felafel mates Slem & Lummy had done at the Bridge Hotel Rozelle in the late 90s. For mine, it just didn't fly and it took me 15 years of thinking about it to work out what was missing. The prob for stage was a structural which was my own fault from that phone call with Birmo years before. The prob is that the characters of Birmo and Jordan (the guy who ruins their world) never actually engage directly, which means the conflict is never 'head-on' and misses the mark on stage. Bloody different thing if it's a book where time and place is infinitely more malleable.

Anyhow, won an award or two, and someone clever buggers in Queensland later scored $40k for their script that never became a film.

If anyone ever wants to do this and has the money, get in touch.

Actually, forget it. Being a Would-be movie producer is second only to wanting to be a theatre critic as the lowest form of undertaking any human could be called upon to ever undertake.
